Stone’s eight batch of their Enjoy by Double IPA is the 07.04.13 version, bottled on 05.31.13. As most Stone lovers know, this beer is brewed specifically NOT to last, underscoring the importance of drinking this super dank hoppy citrus bomb as fresh as possible. Their message is clear: “There is no better time to try this beer than NOW”.
The 07.04.13 is BIG, undeniably hoppy, and best enjoyed COLD in addition, to NOW. The first sip showcases this beers great balance, hop punch, and crisp finish. The floral and citrus characters hit you immediately out of the glass. The beer is intense and languid on the tongue. The flavor starts off mildly malty and fruity, followed by a hop punch that showcases the peachiness and dankness of the brew. The aftertaste on this is strong as well, and long-lasting, bringing a second element of flavor appreciation.

Stones description of the brewing process for this beer showcases the devotion to hops that went into this double IPA, alongside the experimentation and play on citrus, florals, malt and previous brewing techniques. According to their tasting notes from Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, the “hopping, as might be expected, was over the top. First, the brew was mash-hopped with Calypso, a beautiful fruity hop that we also used in our Stone 16th Anniversary IPA, after which we kettle-hopped with a very small dose of Super Galena hop extract for bittering. Then, using a technique known in homebrew circles as “hop bursting,” we loaded up very heavily on the flavor hops at the end of the boil and in the whirlpool. Simcoe, Delta, Target and Amarillo were used in the late kettle hop. Motueka, Citra, and Cascade were used for the whirlpool hop. As you can clearly tell, this beer was super hoppy even before we dry-hopped it, but then we went for it…dry-hopping with one pound per barrel EACH of New Zealand Nelson Sauvin and Australian Galaxy.”

Enjoy by is not for the faint of heart, looking for a mild accompaniment to their early summer BBQ. It packs a long-lasting punch, initially full of citrus and grapefruit that sweetens into a musky and floral aftertaste with vague hints of onion. While strong, it’s very drinkable, and will have you coming back for more.

If you didn’t get a chance to try this batch (and supplies are limited), Pliny the Elder is a comparable brew.
